Thanks for the advice, but I have done some pretty extensive research and my post here is a last call. All these outlets offer the modern (now popular) variety, which extend down the legs. But I think they look a bit unmanly (hate all the patterns, I am a plain man who likes just black, just white, etc) and, dare I say, “gay” (in the general meaning of the word, i.e. pretty pathetic). If you’ve seen men fight in the shorter versions, you wonder at this new craze for longer shorts... I think my only options, if I want to get my hands on a new pair, is to find some miraculously left-over stock... or just wait until the fashion for short/compression comes around again.
Something like this? - These are the closest that I could think of that fit your description.
I am with you though .. most of the designs on the shorts are very "special" in a way. I'd really enjoy it if they were just plain black or dark with maybe some lettering.
Yes, that is the style I am thinking of. The design is still pretty "gay" in my opinion, but I think you know what I am getting at in terms of style. Shame sports designers do not make gear more in line with sports science – which demands distinct action, distinct strikes, economic grappling and, hence, simplicity and distinct colours (plain black, white, red, blue...). Let your fighting skills talk for you, not the design covering your ass and legs!
Does anyone know where I can buy a pair of tight MMA shorts or trunks of the type popular in the 1990s or early 2000s? Like the kind worn by the blonde stud (Andrei Semyonov) in this clip (go to 1:00 for a close-up of the shorts):
Those are usually sold as "Vale Tudo Shorts". Several popular MMA brands usually offer them too, i.e. Venum or Smmash.
Amazon or your trusted Combat sports retailer should have some in stock!

It's probably the simplest design there is out there though, which is unfortunate!
You could also try and reach out to https://www.scramblestuff.com/ if they might be able to produce a short to fit your style to a reasonable price.

I would also like to buy a pair of red sambo shorts (also ass-hugging, not loose). An example (and best offer I have found online at $17) can be seen here:

I have no idea about sambo shorts though!
