I guess I'm a little late to the conversation, but I am very much into medevial/gladiator style sword fighting. I'd like to imagine myself as a journeyman in the rural wilderness who encounters his opponent, and then we fight to the death. I'd like to fight shirtless and in tight, dark colored underwear and boots.
I was training in iaido (Japanese sword fighting) for a few years. It's not as much fun as you'd expect. I still have the katana, it's a beautiful instrument, but other than being cool it is ultimately useless. It's not like I would use it for home defense. :)
I would certainly not use it in a competitive fight without protection. If you want to do a good approximation of compeititve sword fighting, you could look into kendo. They use an imitation sword made of bamboo and wear full body armor, but the techniques are very real.

greetings. sword fighting is an amazing art of combat.
i was training in a korean sword style called Kumbup.
love a chance to cross blades.
cold steel makes good rubber training swords.
they have O bokken, bokken, wakasashi and tanto.
