DevonWrestler & Retiarius: I've also heard that armlock called a "keylock", and I have heard that although it works from the mount, it's more effective from side control.

DevonWrestler : In judo they called it ude garame (entangled armlock), in bjj it's sometimes called an americano and in wrestling I am not sure other than armlock - it can be done from the mount or side :)

I'm 100% submission with no interest in BritPro, but I *did* win a sub match once by using a hold that is not really a sub technique...

It was against a very big, strong guy who I had never been able to beat before, and who loved winning... we grappled about and at one point he was on his stomach and I was on top facing his feet. I suddenly saw my opportunity and, almost without thinking, grabbed his feet and put on a Boston Crab. He cried out and tapped out PDQ!

On another ocassion I was in a judo class and found myself in a very similar situation, but I managed to restrain myself... I had a vision of executing a Boston Crab on my opponent and whooping in triumph as everyone in the dojo stops and gapes at me in stunned silence...

This is a hold that has won me quite a few matches, actually its probably won me more than half the matches I ever won! I am no expert on the technicalities of wrestling, I know this is an armlock, but can someone tell me what type of armlock, does it have a special name? (I am the oldish guy with the grey hair)

Although it may not be all that obvious from this picture, this oponent was a lot stronger than me, also heavier and i think he also has more wrestling experience. We have wrestled several times and he normally beats me, leaving me exhausted and a bit sore, which is how it should be when you have lost, but on this occasion I got lucky and there was someone with a camera to record the moment. I fuzzed out his face in the pic to save his embarrassment - but it was not a happy face at all!

I do find this a relatively easy hold to apply, and once it is applied I like to take my time over it so that the oponent can appreciate his situation, also safer that way to avoid injury of course.

Only problem with this hold is that I now find it so useful that I tend to go for it rather too often, I think you do need to try different holds and moves to keep the fighting interesting.

Rear naked is a formidable hold for sure. Never, ever turn your back to a submission wrestler. It's what he wants you to do :)

Well, the rear naked I got a win with in my first fight will be with me until I die. Firmly tattooed on left shoulder. Love it....

OK, another question for you guys:

Do you have a hold that you are very fond of because it won you a fight?

I remember my first tournament match that I won with a kind of front choke (I'm not sure what the name is). I was in a mount position, and managed to work my left lower arm under the guy's neck. I held my right gi lapel with my left hand and pressed my right hand against the side of the next. Pulling on the lapel presented enough force to make the guy tap!

I remember that fondly each time I manage to apply this choke.. :)
