Underwater rugby looks like a lot of fun. I'd love to try it. I'm a decent swimmer. If anyone within 50 miles of Washington DC knows of a venue here please let me know.

Thanks

So have you had a chance to see if that group is still active and have you had a chance to check out one of their practices?

As near as I can tell they are still active. I haven't been to a practice yet. I've been really busy with things at home and unfortunately the drive towards DC from where I live is usually brutal. I will try to get there though.

Hey Just Dan.... Did you have a chance to check out the underwater rugby folks? I'm curious to hear a first hand report. I happened to see a segment on the news today about wheelchair rugby. It looked like those folks were seriously trying to beat the c*p out of each other. Which is impressive to watch given everyone was in wheelchairs and some of them were double amputees.

Way, way, cool. I'm curious about the vibe in underwater rugby.

I still havne't gotten up there NW. I sold my house much faster than expected and have been busy with dealing with that. Once I get moved I'll be as close to Richmond as I am to DC now. If there is a presence in Richmond I'd like to check that out.

From what I can tell the one in DC is the real deal. It looks like a lot of fun to me. I love the water and love to compete, it's a near perfect fit.

Yes it looks like you just have fun doing it like you said. Why dont you post it on You Tube also. There is nothing X rated or anything against the You Tube rules would not allow you to on there. Enjoy it a lot. Dean

Thanks. I was able to search for underwatermask on the xtube site and see his free videos. I didn't think anything as shallow as what his were shot in would work but it obvious does in the right context. That looked to around 24 inches.

Intex makes a large inflatable rectangular pool which is 120" x 72" x 24" deep which might work if you set up where you can tolerate water sloshing out. They also have a round inflatable pools that 8 feet and 12 feet in diameter x 30 inches deep or if you maybe had a clear span two car garage, you could squeeze in the 15 feet diameter x 42 deep.

FWIW, an underwater rugby video I stumbled across on Vimeo

What did not occur to me until I looked at the video was that the teams were coed.

I saw somewhere in the writeups on Aquathlon that part of the their training regime was underwater rugby. Makes me suspect that anyone doing either on a competitive basis has really good cardio.

Given the Ukrainians and the Russians have a low level shooting war going on, I'm guessing either Aquathlon events have not been held recently or they are real interesting when those two meet the water.

Google Water Wrestling, You Tube Water Wrestling and you will see all different rules and regulations all around the world. They have deep underwater wrestling and shallow underwater. Actually x tube actually has a great one for water wrestling in one foot of water that is really hot. Email me at [email protected] put water wrestling in the subject and can send you to the video and other things.

Actually trying the 1 foot of water thing in Fort Lauderdale Florida and need some guys under 200 pounds or very muscular to try it with.

FWIW, I tried to look at the Aquathlon rules on the CMAS web site and my antivirus blocked it

ie, if I try to pulll up the reference documents, it gets blocked.

Out of curiosity, does anyone have or seen a set of rules or do or don't do's for water wrestling that they would care to share? Just fooling around trying to dunk the other person is one thing - actually doing some serious wrestling in water strikes me as something different. I know there is Aquathlon which seems to be a russian "thing" and seems to be more like flag football in a deep pool. More like underwater hockey I would guess.

But if you are trying to actually wrestle in something more than a token amount of water - 12 inches for the sake of discussion - what sort of expectations do you use for both parties to do it without risking actually drowning somone?

One example - one person has their head above water and can breathe. The other person is underwater in some sort of hold - cradle for example. Would you use a 5 to 10 count as the limit on how long you would keep the other person under before releasing the hold regardless of whether you felt a tap out?

Variable for the scenario - water depth for one. 24 to 60 inches is maybe the range where you could maybe expect one person to have their head above water and the other to be under. If the water is deeper than 60 inches, you are probably in a real pool versus an above ground pool. In which case you probably don't have a scenario where one person can touch the pool bottom and the other can't.

Just for context, I date back to where part of scuba diving training included a free ascent from depth and a free dive to bottom and donning gear. The various certification agencies would probably "soil their underwear" if you mentioned doing either in a basic scuba course.
